The short version
Carbery turns nearby speech into large captions so someone hard-of-hearing can stay part of the conversation. There are no accounts, no advertising, and no tracking. Conversations live on your device and disappear when you clear them or close the app.
Speech and captions
In the iOS app, speech is recognised by Apple's speech recognition. On recent devices this happens entirely on the device; on others Apple may process audio on its servers, as described in the permission prompt iOS shows you. In the Android app, speech is recognised by your device's speech service (usually Google's), which behaves the same way. In the web app, speech recognition is provided by your browser (for example Safari or Chrome), which may use its maker's servers. Carbery itself never stores or receives your audio.
Suggested replies and the spoken voice
If suggested replies are switched on, the last few captioned lines of text (never audio) are sent to our server and passed to Google's Gemini service to produce three short replies. If the warmer AI voice is switched on, the tapped reply text is sent the same way to produce the audio. We don't store these requests, and they carry no name, account, or identifier. You can switch both features off in Settings, and captioning works fully without them.
What stays on the device
Speaker names, reading preferences, and the conversation history shown in “Earlier” are stored only on your device. Nothing is synced anywhere. Clearing the conversation removes it.
